Wordless: A Mystery Coin

This week’s mystery involves the coin you see above. There is quite a story surrounding this coin….one that involves a much larger and much more tragic story during a very difficult time in American history.

Can you tell me why this coin is important? Where was it found?

I’ll be writing about this coin next week with full disclosure, but for now…how about a guess?

How neat!

I will venture a guess. Judging by the date on the coin, 1860, I feel it probably has something to do with the time immediately preceding the Civil War. It looks like a picture of a woman with a tiara or a crown. Could it have to do with a foreign nation supporting the confederacy? I seem to recall something about England or France lending support to one side during the war.

Well, that's all I got.
Can't wait to find out the true story!

Hmmm....I'm fairly confident that the bust is of Lady Liberty. If that's correct, then the coin must also have a dollar, rather than a cents, value. How much, I don't have a clue.

1860 is just a couple of years before the start of the Civil War. If this coin is important, as your question indicates, I'm going to guess that it has something to do with the Civil War, more specifically with a significant battle.

Beyond that, I don't have a clue, LOL!

Could this be the romantic coin found a few years ago when they raised the Confederate sub, the Hunley? There was a story about a gold coin a lady gave as a good luck charm. It stopped a bullet and saved the life she loved, though he lost it later when the sub was sunk.
