In matters that involve all of us living in this great nation I think we are much better off looking first to the one thing that binds us together. As a Southern Baptist I dearly wish it could be the Bible, but it's the Constitution. Of course, if we all thought the same way about everything it would be very boring. I may not always agree with someone, but I will defend their right to do as they wish as long as it's legal.EHThttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17964668210604436937noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20993778.post-86432807013333600792006-12-15T15:59:00.000-05:002006-12-15T15:59:00.000-05:00This comment has been removed by the author.EHThttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17964668210604436937noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20993778.post-73837454337308818272006-12-15T06:45:00.000-05:002006-12-15T06:45:00.000-05:00As an atheist it's refreshing to hear that a self ...As an atheist it's refreshing to hear that a self described conservative Christian is talking sanely and intelligently on this issue. The Catholic missal that Johnson was sworn in with did belong to Kennedy, and at first it was reported to be a Bible.

Also the Library of Congress website, "Presidential Inaugurations...I So Solemnly Swear" also mentions Johnson was sworn in with his hand on a missal (this was the first inauguration on a plane and the first inauguration administered by a woman).

Johnson used a family Bibile during his second inauguration and it was the first time a First Lady held the Bible.

Another president that did not choose to use a Bible was John Adams. It has been reported that he placed his hand on the Constitution itself.EHThttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17964668210604436937noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20993778.post-1165873787459079142006-12-11T16:49:00.000-05:002006-12-11T16:49:00.000-05:00Teachergirl, I'll try and fact-check that issue as...Teachergirl, I'll try and fact-check that issue as well. I was trusting someone else and I should have verified it. I'm sorry about the death....that's so sad.

Jennifer, I was doing some visiting around yesterday to read what others were saying about this issue and I was appalled by what many people who profess to be Christians were writing. Their lack of knowledge regarding our rights was shocking. I don't know if this means anything but most of the crazies were on My Space....I wanted to comment but didn't have the time to register. Maybe I can get back to that later this week.

Thanks Jennie....as much as we know and don't know about good old George I can't believe someone didn't know he had slaves. Quite apparently, it often takes a Prager to bring reasonable liberals and conservatives together in agreement. Of course, while Prager claims that Ellison is damaging the fabric of America, it is really Prager who continues to do all he can to foment the public divide we witness today.

My personal opinion is that Prager is catering to the Christian-right to try and insure support for Israel, sort of his personal mission in life. I'm doing some research on that point at the moment and hope to have an article ready at some point in the near future.

John Teague
The Partisan BlastAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
