This seemed not right for some reason. I love Mexico, but hey . . . we're all in America.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20993778.post-37357020778023179942007-06-15T15:41:00.000-04:002007-06-15T15:41:00.000-04:00What a fantastic post. I REMEMBER watching Red Skelton back then (I was a recent h.s. graduate) and found it very powerful.

If it's ok with you, I am going to 'borrow' your idea to start off the new school year. Since I am teaching US History, this might be a novel way to introduce them to the class.

How is your summer going?Butterfly Angelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05315628420188613289noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20993778.post-20048691532852735592007-06-14T19:31:00.000-04:002007-06-14T19:31:00.000-04:00Hi Perri, thanks for the additional info....my stu...Hi Perri, thanks for the additional info....my students overwhelmingly said they didn't care about any of the rulings that might come down in the future--they will continue to say the pledge as they see fit.EHThttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17964668210604436937noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20993778.post-90562379682060847592007-06-14T16:08:00.000-04:002007-06-14T16:08:00.000-04:00The words "Under God" in the pledge were affirmed ...The words "Under God" in the pledge were affirmed by Congress in an update to the flag code in public law 107-293 section 2(b). At the time the findings of congress used to support the law mentioned two supreme court cases, first Zorach v. Clauson, 343 U.S. 306 (1952).
The opinion of the court in that case said that "The First Amendment, however, does not say that in every and all respects there shall be a separation of Church and State. Rather, it studiously defines the manner, the specific ways, in which there shall be no concern or union or dependency one on the other. That is the common sense of the matter. Otherwise State and religion would be aliens to each other - hostile, suspicious, and even unfriendly."

The second supreme court case cited was Abington Schoold District v. Schempp, 374 U.S. 203 (1963). The concurrance by Justices Goldberg and Harlan stated: "But untutored devotion to the concept of neutrality can lead to invocation or approval of results whcih partake not simply of that noninterference and noninvolvement with the religious which the Constitution commands, but of a brooding and pervasive devotion to the secular and a passive, or even active, hostility to the religious. Such resuls are not only not compelled by the Constitution, but, it seems to me, are prohibited by it."

The same concurrance also said "many of our legal, political, and personal values derive historically from religious teachings. Government must inevitably take cognizance of the existence of religion and, indeed, under certain circumstances the First Amendment may require that it do so."

I hope that the pledge stands as it is. The law, and supreme court precedent demands it.Perri Nelsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17000458399861920389noreply@blogger.com
