I mentioned Fruithurst. At least from what I've been told living here, and I'm not sure how true it is, there was another boom in the area around the 1840s. A bunch of German immigrants moved into the area and started producing wine. They sided with the Union during the civil war and were run off.Joey McDanielhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14772105986615227712noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20993778.post-52183713316226161122015-11-29T12:02:42.860-05:002015-11-29T12:02:42.860-05:00I went to Eastern Elementary School from 1st throu...I went to Eastern Elementary School from 1st through 4th grades. I too had Mrs. Olvey for third grade. Miss Ivey for first grade and Mrs Allen for 2nd grade. I attended from 1961-1965. I remember playing marbles on the playground . I played with the boys a lot even though I'm a girl. My two older brothers attended Eastern as well. One day while in the lunchroom, I saw teachers going to and from the playground. They left the building with clean white towels and returned with blood soaked towels. My older brother had been hit in the head with a baseball bat (accidentally). He was ok after a few stitches. I also remember my other brother being put in a baby bed for punishment. The baby beds were kept in the hallways so that all the kids in the school could see who got in trouble. I was really embarrassed to see my brother in there. I have to admit, as much as I loved school there was a good bit of fear that followed me in the building each day. Does anyone else remember the baby beds?
Valerie Sapphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16941728498156401515noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20993778.post-90338923091314521072015-11-29T11:46:25.497-05:002015-11-29T11:46:25.497-05:00I went to Eastern Elementary from first grade in 1...I went to Eastern Elementary from first grade in 1961 through 4th grade in 1965. They didn't have kindergarten back then. Captain Kangaroo was my kindergarten teacher. I have many good memories there but I also have some shocking memories. Does anyone remember the baby beds in the halls? If you got in trouble you were put in a baby bed for all the other kids to see. One time my brother was in the baby bed when my class came in from recess. I was so embarrassed! What a horrible discipline system. I am "retired" from teaching now and I can only imagine what would happen if a school did that today. My husband and I have been beside ourselves since hearing this week (19 Oct. 2015) that our daughter’s 6th grade World Cultures class in a Texas public school had been discussing the transatlantic slave trade in superficial, distorted terms. The 1-page worksheet she came home with one day was bad enough, but a day or so later, we learned that the teacher briefly discussed how “slavery wasn’t that bad for some slaves” and then showed a clip from Gone With the Wind to illustrate the point! (The scene were Mammy is trying to lace Scarlett into her corset after Scarlett had given birth and found that she lost her wasp waist, if anyone wants to know the scene.) THIS is what passes for history education in Texas. Disgusting. He bought his land from the railroad and he felt he needed help from the local law to remove the "squatters" from his land. He must have realized it would get heated as he put my g-grandmother and their very young daughter on a train and sent them to stay with a relative in Georgetown, CA. The next day my g-grandmother heard of her husbands fate. She and her daughter went back to Hanford and finally settled his estate in August of 1880. She was heartbroken. Mills was the love of her life. She left California to make a new life for her and her young daughter in Colorado near her parents, never to return. There she met and married my g-grandfather.
Linda Amo Siders
Native CalifornianAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10909745923167936967noreply@blogger.com
