Cornwallis was not there; he was sick or, 'indisposed'. (While the siege was a frustrating experience for him, his future life was a good, full, and eventful one.) It was his second in command, Charles O'Hara who actually surrendered to Gen. Washington's second in command, Gen. Benjamin Lincoln. It's worth looking up.<BR/><BR/>Additionally, many of the Hessian mercenaries, for one reason or another, remained behind in Virginia.
