Can you identify the region, the tribe, and what they are wearing?

ReplyDeleteHistory is not my strong point, so I have no clue, but I really love the contrast between the native clothing in the foreground and the clothing on the people in the background.

ReplyDeleteMayans? I heard they could have huge problems for the hurricane today because they have no TV or radio so they heard no warnings (so why didn't the government send people in to warn them?!) That's what NPR said today.
ReplyDeleteGreat picture analysis Carly B. The time period my students study Native Americans is between 1300-1400 A.D. prior to major European exploration. Naturally there were no pictures during that time, so many of the images I snag are ones were the time period is being created such as this one. The people in the foreground are wearing ceremonial clothing, but during the time we study the clothing would have been worn often.
ReplyDeleteNo, Meeyauw. These natives are not Mayans. There are no true Mayans left though there are several citizens of Mexico that have Mayan ancestry.
I'm not really sure why the Mexican government didn't do more to warn their people though my news reports said the hardest hit areas were not as inhabited.

ReplyDeleteneat photo, it makes me think of the book "Boston Jane" and she ended up in Washington state area, the natives were fishing for clams- this picture makes me think of that.

Can someone tell us why these folks look like they are wearing straw huts?

I am guessing their clothing is made out of cedar bark, which was plentiful in the area and which they used for many things, including clothing and plank longhouses.
