Wordless 47

This is a very important spot in history. Can you tell me where it is and why it is important? Here’s a hint……it’s not in the United States and does not involve any historical event during the 1800s or 1900s.

Last week’s explanation can be found here.

More wordless images can be found here.

That is just awesome. I know I have seen that in one of my ancient history books but I cannot think of what it is . Maybe. I know I have seen it somewhere.

No idea where it is but you did a great shot!
Mine is up here;

Happy WW. Have a nice day. :-)

Is it an astrological sort of something?

I'm guessing that is the Mediterranean Sea based on the little architectural hints there are. Could be Greece. An old Greek Theatre perhaps. Great question! Look forward to the answer.

Absolutely no idea but will be sure to check back and find out. My husband thinks it has something to do with Columbus.

I was going to ask if it was ancient, but see someone has already said that. Maybe somewhere in the middle east?

No help from me...clueless too. Happy WW.

Good morning! Here are some answers to the guesses we have had so far....this place does not involve what I would refer to as ancient history, it does not involve the Greeks, and it does not involve out and out astrology. Columbus did visit this place.

Something to do with WWI or WWII is my best guess

One of the islands in the Caribbean that Columbus landed?

EHT said...

Nope, not World War I or II and it is not in the Caribbean

Hmmm . . . I have no idea. Some spot or plans for a S. American pyramid?

Nice blog, btw -- I have a degree in history/secondary ed.

Does this have something to do with Washington Irving again?

EHT said...

I had to chuckle GriftDrift when I saw your comment. No, it doesn't, but you are on the right "peninsula".

Another hint.....look at the diagram.......what could it be?

It's Leonardo Da Vinci's sketch for the world's first ferris wheel!
(Hee hee!)

(Sorry no time to research...)

Well...does it have anything to do with navigation or longitude and latitude - perhaps in England? (I've been to Greenwich, but I it's not there.)

griftdrift said...

This one is driving me crazy. I have a feeling it has something to do with his visit to Lisbon after the first voyage.

EHT said...

Tour Marm, this image does have something to do with navigation....the image is not in England.

GriftDrift...this image centers not on Columbus but on someone else.

Can I have a crack at it?

I had no idea, so I showed my husband, knowing full well he would doggedly search for the answer.

He tells me it is a wind compass.

Specifically the Rosa dos ventos on the Sagres Peninsula, Portugal.

He says if he is right, I have to give him a treat.
Thanks! This was a really challenging WW and it took him away from his model helicopter forums for a while.

EHT said...

Yes, Tiff...you are correct. Sagres was the location of Prince Henry the Navigator's school where many sailors and explorers were trained. My students always state Prince Henry is the easiest person from our explorers unit to remember because he's the one who never went anywhere, but enabled so many others to go.

I was so close! I kept searching for compass but never found anything.
