Okay- if this is American History- those redcoats, it must be the Revolutionary War (no, maybe that's not true- French and Indian War?) Quite the Pieta image going on there, in any case.

Didn't want to be first. I can even fake it.

I first thought it would be a picture of the French revolution, but then I thought it must be America, as you live there. So I guess it concerns the American Revolutionary war around 1776 where the British were chased from Boston. Sometimes it's good to read "Gone with the Wind" because of this book I became interested in American wars ! The painting represents the "Battle of Bunker Hill" right ?

Oh no...lol
I HATED History with a passion in school. It wasn't until I got older that I even cared anything about it. I do have to say I have no idea what this is or what was unusual about it :(

sorry..

thanks for stopping by my place though.

My art teacher would be disappointed in me; I cannot remember what that is! It's finals week for me so perhaps that is why I can't think of it.

Thank you for stopping by and commenting on my WW. Have a great day and congrats on the nomination!

IIRC, that Turmbo (?) painting depicts the "Battle of Bunker Hill"....but wasn't most of the fighting actually on neighboring Breed's Hill. I also seem to recall something about the Royal Marines being in the picture, and there is a Major Pitcarin? Several of the British officers depicted in this painting had good careers with the Royal Navy/Army.

This battle was fought after the British rout from Lexington and Concord, and the Brits were very happy to find the Colonials in a position where they could be attacked, as opposed to hiding behind trees and rocks and sniping at his majesty's military troops. After several assults, the Colonials were driven off the hills, and the Brits barracaded themselves in Boston.

Also, IIRC, there was some miscommunications or intraservice problem between the ground forces and the RN, and there was not much help rendered by the guns of the RN. Or maybe it was that there were not many RN ships ( man-o-wars, frigates, brigs, etc.) available to lend a hand.

Hmmm. I stink at history. I guess it's a good thing I found your blog! I think I might need some brushing up!

I am better with more recent history 20th century stuff. Anything before that, I'm lost. I am curious to know though.

I knew it was the Revolution, so I did a little (Google) searching. I found this page:

But Polski3 already answered the question.

Ah, Lady S. you are so right.

Look for my post tomorrow evening regarding my interpretation of this painting and a couple of unique items about this battle.

The Battle of Bunker Hill by John Trumbull.

The battle actually took place on breed's Hill and although the british actually won, they lost 10% of their officers and about 1000 men.

Here is an interesting side note. One of the first forensic identification by dental work was done by Paul Revere at the request of a young 'patriot's' family. Paul Revere was a dentist, amongs other things, and was able to locate the remains of their loved one who fell at Bunker/Breed's Hill.

A.M Whittacker, thanks so much for the detail about Revere.....I'm sure many folks didn't know this.
