Wordless 36

If it’s August then Georgia fourth graders are probably studying Native American regions.

This is an image I use with students.

Can you identify the region, the tribe, and what they are wearing?

Thanks to all the visitors from last week. I have not posted my explanation yet, but will shortly.

Visit other Wordless images here.

History is not my strong point, so I have no clue, but I really love the contrast between the native clothing in the foreground and the clothing on the people in the background.

I have no idea. Isn't that sad? Your fourth graders are about to know more about American history than the rest of us! But I'm intrigued for sure. Great pic!

Mayans? I heard they could have huge problems for the hurricane today because they have no TV or radio so they heard no warnings (so why didn't the government send people in to warn them?!) That's what NPR said today.

Great picture analysis Carly B. The time period my students study Native Americans is between 1300-1400 A.D. prior to major European exploration. Naturally there were no pictures during that time, so many of the images I snag are ones were the time period is being created such as this one. The people in the foreground are wearing ceremonial clothing, but during the time we study the clothing would have been worn often.

No, Meeyauw. These natives are not Mayans. There are no true Mayans left though there are several citizens of Mexico that have Mayan ancestry.

I'm not really sure why the Mexican government didn't do more to warn their people though my news reports said the hardest hit areas were not as inhabited.

I have no idea about the rest but they do look like they are wearing straw huts.

neat photo, it makes me think of the book "Boston Jane" and she ended up in Washington state area, the natives were fishing for clams- this picture makes me think of that.

thanks for sharing it!

I thought Polyneis area first, but are there big tall pine trees there? Maybe the Great Northwwest?

EHT said...

Letha, those outfits do resemble straw huts, don't they?

Starlight, the region is indeed the Pacific Northwest. Jenny and Jumpback you are also correct.

Can someone tell us why these folks look like they are wearing straw huts?

The explanation will be up tomorrow.

Look for my 13 list which will be all about the National Powwow.

I am guessing their clothing is made out of cedar bark, which was plentiful in the area and which they used for many things, including clothing and plank longhouses.

You got it, Alasandra!

Now, can somebody name the exact tribe? Yes, I know.....that is kind of difficult unless you really know your Native Americans.:)

Are they called Puget Sound Indians?

EHT said...

No, not these particular natives in the picture.

I am stumped. I was hoping someone else had guessed correctly. I'll be looking forward to learning the tribes name next week.
