Thursday 13: Version 13 Top Architectural Sites

Yahoo is reporting that the American Institute of Architects (AIA) recently named the top 150 architectural works across the United States in conjunction with their 150th anniversary in 2007. The top sites were chosen from a preselected list of 248 structures in a poll conducted by market researcher Harris Interactive on behalf of the AIA.

Here are 13 minus 3 of the top architectural works from the American Institute of Architects’ list:

1. Empire State Building

2. The White House

3. Washington National
Cathedral

4. Jefferson Memorial

5. Golden Gate Bridge

6. U.S. Capitol Building

7. Lincoln Memorial

8. Biltmore Estate
Vanderbilt Mansion

9. Chrysler Building

10. Vietnam Veterans
Memorial
I tried to find a link to the entire list,
but couldn't. I'd like to see what else is on it.

Ok, I realize some of the text and pictures are "off". I'm fairly sure it has something to do with the code. I attempted to fix it 5 times, before saying "enough". Be nice to me....I've had a hard week.

Happy 13!

I hope to see a few of these places this summer when we go to DC and NYC on our way to a family reunion. Great list and wonderful idea for T13.

I started a new job and have 13 things I see each day! Happy Thursday!

fixing pics on a blog is sometimes impossible. As long as we can see them, what does it matter?

and sadly... i haven't been to any of these yet...

Hey, if you can't figure out which picture goes with which building, there's a problem (okay, or maybe you're not American. I'll give you that one). The only one I don't think I've seen before is the Vanderbilt mansion. I just might need to see more of it...

Happy TT!

Yep, there really ARE women who are comfortable naked. And they aren't all adult film stars or exotic dancers, either! *grin*

I'd LOVE to see the Vanderbilt Estate. I'll have to add it to my wish list of places. High up; I really like that sort of thing.

Thanks for visiting West of Mars this week!

Very interesting TT. Thanks for sharing the info about the AIA list.

I have seen 4 of them, but for me the city where you see the most beautiful architectural work is Chicago ! It is internationally known by architects and there is also a very famous school. I loved these old skyscrapers with gold ornaments and anyway I found this city very nice.

I spent a few December days in DC and the architecture really is amazing. Some of my favorite places. Several of the others are on my places to see list.

Well, I've been to all of them on tour! I think the US Capitol should have been higher on the list; it's one of the most recognizable buildings in the world.

Now it's time for you to give me a break, I'm having trouble with html on this. The link that will eventually list these sites is the AIA America's Favorite. They haven't updated their own site:
http://www.aia.org/aiarchitect/thisweek07/0202/0202n_afa150.cfm

There is another interesting vote which is the, 7 New Wonders of the World. One can vote on these and the announcement will be in Brussels on 07/07/07!

Nine out of 10 isn't bad I guess. I've been to Baltimore but haven't seen that particular building.

i've seen picture of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception at Dc and I'm sure it should be included too... it's beautiful... in the shape of a cross...

I agree, everyone should be able to figure out each picture. Living in the DC area, I have seen most of these. One of the most moving is the Vietman memorial. I have seen it many times and it just really touches me. Hubby works across the stree from the Capitol, so that is no big deal to us. haha

Great TT

I'd love to visit them all! In fact, all 150. :-) I love architecture very much.
My TT is about types of support.

Nice pictures.

I hope to get to see them all in person one day. I have the ones in DC out of the way so I just have to find a way to visit the rest.

My TT is about Valentines

This is a FANTASTIC TT! Except for the Biltmore estate, I have had the pleasure of seeing and visiting the other 11.

I would also count the Iwo Jima monument. Semper Fi to Marines everywhere, past and present.

What a great list. All of these buildings are amazing. The Biltmore Estate is absolutely unbelievable. I have doing some genealogical research and have discovered my husband is related to the Vanderbilts!! I think we should go the the Estate and take our rightful place...don't you???
Thanks for coming by my T13.

I've seen them all and even been in #1 as we hit it on open day... do they still do that with all this terrorism now? It was a great experience. Great TT

I've been to all of them except the Vanderbilt and the Empire State Building. Yay!

(That's unusual for me, 'cause I usually travel off the beaten path...when I travel.)

Anyone else think skyscrapers aren't really great? I mean I understand the signifianace of the first and the biggest, but after that...they are just big, not awe-inspiring.

Since I went to NYC over Christmas...I can now say I've seen every one of these places! That's exciting.

My TT is up, too. I am also a teacher (elementary Literacy Coach).

I've seen 3 of those. I would still like to see the Golden Gate bridge, and the Biltmore.

Check out my TT.

Nice idea! I've seen all but number 9--I guess that's next!

Joy said...

cool. 5 of the 10 are within a half mile of where I'm at right now. 1 other is about 3 miles away.

I've seen all but one, and the other nine never fail to impress everytime I see them..

I went through the Biltmore estate a few summers ago, which was truly breathtaking. This is a great post, one I'd also like to share with my students. It's easy to see why many of them have been featured in films, isn't it?
